This year 763 varsity college football teams will play over 4,000 games. In 2017, four schools have added football (Alabama-Birmingham, Dean, St. Andrews, Texas Wesleyan), one school dropped the sport (Maranatha Baptist Bible) and another went out of business (St. Joseph's in Indiana). Virginia University of Lynchburg will be a countable opponent for the NCAA and NAIA this year due to its joining the National Christian College Athletic Association.
